Fishermen’s in Wellington, New Zealand was fishing for Pantagonian toothfish , sold under a name called Chilean Sea bass when they caught a humongous colossal squid that weigh half a ton which is known as the largest specimen landed on the earth.. with a toothfish hooked on it! The squid estimate about 990 Ibs and about 39 feet long which took them approximately 2 hours to land it in the Antarctic waters. The Colossal squid, also known by its scientific name Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni, are estimated to grow up to 46 feet long and have long been one of the most mysterious creatures of the deep ocean.
If the original estimates are correct, the squid would be 330 pounds heavier than the previous largest specimen ever found in history."I can assure you that this is going to draw phenomenal interest. It is truly amazing," said Dr. Steve O'Shea, a squid expert at the Auckland University of Technology. If calamari rings were made from the squid they would be the size of tractor tires, The Colossal squid can descend to 6,500 feet and are extremely active, aggressive hunters, he added. The frozen squid will then be brought to New Zealand's national museum, Te Papa, in the capital of Wellington to be conserved for further studies.
The Marine scientists Anderton added that they "will be very interested in this amazing creature as it adds immeasurably to our understanding of the marine environment,"
Nevertheless, the colossal squid are only found in the Antarctic seas which are not associated with the giant squid found around the coast of New Zealand. The Giant squid could develop as extensive as 39 feet, but are certainly not as heavy as the colossal squid.
